On Nov. 25, a major US-Mexico border crossing in San Diego was closed for hours after a group of migrants on the Mexican side rushed the border area. This led the US Border Patrol agents to fire tear gas at the group.

US Customs and Border Protection said the migrants threw projectiles that struck several agents.

“Border Patrol agents deployed tear gas to dispel the group because of the risk to agents’ safety,” the agency said on Twitter.

The incident escalated the tensions that have been mounting since groups of Central American migrants began seeking entry into the United States.

The migrants’ action has drawn both negative and positive view of their presence. President Donald Trump has threatened to close the US-Mexico border as he said on Twitter “…We will close the Border permanently if need be…Congress fund the WALL!”

Joey Retzke, a senior at Stevens Point Area Senior High (SPASH) doubted Congress’ support for funding the wall in response to President Trump’s wishes. “It would cost a lot of money which we don’t have,” he said.

Mexico’s Interior Ministry said authorities will process and deport those migrants who tried to cross the border illegally back to their home country.

The Interior Ministry described Sunday’s incident as “acts of provocation” and warned that is could result in a serious incident on the border.

The Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen issued a statement. “DHS will not tolerate this type of lawlessness and will not hesitate to shut down ports of entry for security and public safety reasons….”
