In the year 300 BC in Greece, Alexandria there was this man named Euclid who was referred to as “Father of Geometry” and basically made the main textbook for us to learn till today. But before Euclid was alive the ancient Egyptians used equations to build the pyramids. Mathnasium informs us of “Ancient Egyptians used geometry principles as far back as 3000 BC, using equations to approximate the area of circles among other formulas.” This provides evidence that Euclid didn’t technically invent geometry but the Egyptians had their way with equations to build the structures.
All that time ago people had a limited amount of technology but still used complex equations to solve the measurements of building great historical structures. Instructors (Megan Krance and Mervin Clyde Cananes) said “In Egypt, the Pharaoh wanted to tax crop growers who grew their crops by the Nile River. To calculate the tax, they had to learn how to measure the area of land being used per person.” They even used it economically to deal with crops and the amount there getting. The thing I find interesting about this quote is it takes place around 3,000 to 5,000 years ago in ancient Egypt and the Egyptians found a way to scale and have measurements.
Euclid being the guy that made the elements and geometry he also included arithmetics but didn’t invent them. Mathnasium tells that “Along with arithmetic, geometry was one of the two fields of pre-modern mathematics.” describes that arithmetics wasn’t as popular as geometry then. Arithmetics is taking the sum of group numbers and dividing that sum by the count of numbers used in the series. For instance the Greeks had al lot of unique systems and properties for it being that time period. Mathnasium tells that “Greeks constructed aesthetically pleasing buildings and artworks based on the golden ratio of approximately 1.618.” They made amazing things with simple and complex measurements to achieve generational historic structures.
With people back then with only finite technology like everything was made with wood and stones. Compasses, dividers and rulers were the measuring tools that they could use to plan there ideas out with these instruments. Mathnasium tells of “The compass and straight edge were powerful tools in the advancement of geometry, allowing the construction of various lengths, angles and geometric shapes.” As of right now we have made a ton more progress through because we learn and developed more from past teachings in history.
Study.com informs that “It is used to study physics, discover more about outer space, medical equipment, and even computer science skills to build video games.” This quote explains that geometry wasn’t just meant for building structures but making systems so that society can function with everything. Overall geometry has helped engineers, architecture, civil mechanical even aeronautical to prove that it isn’t just in school but continues to provide structure to our way of life.
