Do you know anyone who has gone through a traumatic childhood? If this ever happened to you in your childhood or anyone close to you, do you know the resources that are available?
Children in homes where a parent suffers from substance abuse will often struggle with meeting their children’s needs, maintaining a stable home and experiencing emotional instability, which can negatively impact the family and the child’s development. The abuse that comes within the substance abuse is mainly caused by the people surrounding the child. This normally occurs within their childhood and will also leave lingering effects, where it then carries into their adulthood. This will result in having trauma from it because of what the children had to go through at such a young age.
The people who would be involved would be the children and their families, for example the children who are getting affected by their parents abuse because they are enhancing the abuse. For instance “Mason et al.(2008) found a higher proportion of parental drug misuse (38.6%) than alcohol misuse (25.3%).” What this means is that parents will still use both drugs and alcohol but some will go more towards drugs than alcohol. This is where the misuse of the substances comes in and then it will increase because of the misuse.
Usually where and when it happens is in the household of the abuser. Substance abuse started in the mid 1880’s and is something that is continuing to happen in today’s society.
It matters to the reader because if they read an article about substance abuse and mental health they could get advice on how to help a person or someone in their family and then they could help them out and direct them to the correct help that person would need. It is significant now because this is such a big issue that is happening in today’s society. It is also a problem that needs to get fixed because so many people are OD from their abuse.
