Schools nowadays are far more different than they were decades ago. With different education styles, going from books and paper assignments to doing everything online. Having the schools security has a big impact on the schools as nowadays you need a keycard to be able to get into the buildings compared to just being able to walk in. Also the change in the social aspects with smartphones and electronics that they have nowadays.
So in what other ways has high school changed for students?
Education
My grandfather who graduated in 1977 mentioned that back then the requirements were still 23.5 credits to graduate and there still were certain classes that you needed to graduate like drivers ed, keyboard class, and a spelling class along with speech/language class. Those were the needed classes and if you had 23.5 credits by semester your senior year you were still able to graduate early as long as you had the requirements. Compared to nowadays it’s pretty similar as in you need 23.5 credits, a certain class you need to take like speech or depait. The amount of electives are about the same as they used to be and the only difference is they changed the name of some of them.
The only time they locked the door was before and after school hours. Nowadays all the doors are locked and you need a keycard to be able to get back into the school after leaving before school ends and after it starts, otherwise all the doors are locked and once you walk out of them you can’t get back in without a keycard. Along with the security nowadays we got a police officer and people to try and help keep the school a safe place to be at.
Security:
I interviewed my Grandfather who went to SPASH in the 1970ś and from that interview I was given a ton of info about the differences of how school was back then compared to how they are now.My grandfather said the schools security wasn’t the best. The school’s security back then wasn’t the best, all the doors were unlocked so you were able to walk out any door and enter the school through any door. There weren’t school officers like how there are nowadays and security guys. The safety wasn’t so good either, for example you were able to bring firearms on the school grounds but had to check in with the office and tell them that you have it. That isn’t the case nowadays, you will get in a ton of trouble for doing that and with how the world nowadays that isn’t the smartest choice. Along with safety the parking lots were full and students had to park on the side of the road and had to walk to school. Parking passes were $5 dollars and cars were everywhere. As you got into the school there were smoking areas and some kids who were hungover because the drinking age was 18 and some kids would show up to school with alcohol in their system. Overall most of the kids wanted to be there even though the teachers were more strict than they are now but as time passes people are more soft, more sensitive, take things to heart way too easy nowadays than they were. Also there were only paper and book assignments which made cheating pretty easy and many people used to cheat on their tests and assignments.
Social Aspects:
Kids back then used to socialize better than they do now because they had to walk over to that person to be able to talk to them unlike how it is nowadays where everyone has a phone so they can just shoot a text or a call. Back then the
Socializing was different, especially when high school students decided to drink alcohol and back then in the 1970ś the drinking age was 18 so the seniors at school would go buy alcohol and supply it to the 17 year olds and there were times where kids would show up hungover or drunk to school. Along with drinking before or at school there were smoking areas where kids and teachers would go to have a smoke break. Compare that to now days you’d get a fine for drinking or smoking on school property and get in trouble with the school and a chance of having the police involved. Nowadays a lot has changed and some is for the better and some not so much for the better it’s just how you look at it. So are the schools nowadays as they were back in the day? No schools nowadays changed quite a bit and did some upgrades to the school grounds and the learning system.
