Lacrosse is the oldest organized sport in North America and it’s still around today. Lacrosse is a competitive physical contact sport played in teams. Lacrosse is a fun sport that echoes a lot of sports you already Know and love. “Lacrosse combines elements from several other sports like hockey, soccer, football and even basketball.” Brandon Kinnard. Athletes that are already in other sports can find something they love in this one. While lacrosse is a full contact sport, safety improvements have been in place since 1876 to ensure a players well being. “Lacrosse is safer than most contact sports” according to the Army & Navy Academy. Known as the fastest game on two feet, lacrosse is thrilling to play and just as exciting to watch. Parents and fans alike find themselves on the edge of their seats with precision passing, incredible goals and nonstop action.
Last year, the Stevens Point area was home to Pacelli United Lacrosse. A club team that allowed players from different schools to compete. Many athletes including myself love the sport. Unfortunately this year no schools affiliated with Pacelli United lacrosse or chose to sponsor the team. Leaving the players without a program to continue their lacrosse career. Now, Spash is exploring possibility of brining lacrosse back as an official school sport. Athletic director David Hauser explained “right now we’re looking for if there’s a need for boys lacrosse”. However, several logistical challenges remain, including having a place to practice Madison field being one possibility and determining if the school has the funding to support another sport.
Mr Hauser stated Spash is very prideful on their diversity “we offer quite a few different sports and we offer quite a lot of clubs” Hauser said “we try to service our student body to try to fit them into something we feel hear at Spash there’s something for you to grab onto hear whether it’s athletics or not” Hauser. Lacrosse could just be an addition to the vast variety at Spash. But there’s one big problem: there’s a survey out for athletes at Spash interested in lacrosse but if there aren’t enough Spash students there may not be a team.
I asked Mr Hauser if he was a fan of co-op sports the answer was a no “ I am not, you know we’re here to service our school” “when you are apart of a team at your own school you’re attached” we feel your attachment here is the most important thing in our building being able to walk around and have contact with the coaches, other people on your team. Just more involved in the school community when you’re involved in athletics” Hauser. Which I stand behind his answer, yes we should support our athletics and our school but also on the flip side what about the team we’ve been playing with since youth I only played for one year but some of those other guys have been playing with each other since they were very young and now there’s no team at all and maybe no chance we can play with those teammates again. If Spash were to have a co-op lacrosse team we’d for sure have a team.
Spash even used to have a club program. Well it never ended “ we never stopped having a lacrosse team per say we were a stand alone lettering club prior to covid we had a good 45 people on the team probably when you were at pjs at the time” Hauser. It was shut down due to covid and after the fact not as many kids got back into it unfortunately so then pacelli wanted to sponsor because a lot of guys over there wanted to play and the Spash guys went over to pacelli to play lacrosse. But now “the sport is now on the rise again – and in Wisconsin, it’s finally made its way to the WIAA.” Kinnard if Spash sponsors the sport we can compete in the tournament. Then who knows maybe 2026 Spash will be the 3rd ever WIAA Lacrosse state champions.
