It can be hard to imagine a world outside of our everyday life in Stevens Point. But one of the most exciting things about traveling is experiencing all the different things each place has to offer. Over 90% of the surveyed population at SPASH say they have an interest in traveling, but one of the hardest decisions to make is where exactly to go. That’s why I have compiled a list of 5 places that would be great destinations for SPASH students and faculty based on a survey I conducted and multiple sources including a comprehensive analysis made by Kuoni–a Britain-based travel company and their senior program manager, Sheena Paton.
1. Europe
Europe is known for their vibrant festivals and events that can range due to how culturally diverse Europe is between all the different countries. One country is France with its iconic city Paris and its many attractions like the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre. Paton says, “Art enthusiasts and history buffs alike aspire to lay eyes on the enigmatic smile of the Mona Lisa,” But if Paris is not your cup of tea there is very accessible transport in Europe making it easy to move onto the next destination.

2. Bora Bora
Possibly one of the most aesthetic destinations on the list, Bora Bora can be a relaxing vacation. Paton says, “Its overwater bungalows, vibrant coral reefs, and stunning lagoon draw visitors seeking an idyllic getaway,” While some do enjoy just laying in the sun, there are other activities for adrenaline seekers like, jet skis, motor boats, parasailing tours and helicopter flights to name a few. One thing travelers should be aware of is that Bora Bora can be expensive with plane tickets averaging $2,000.

Mexico is full of rich heritage with some of the tastiest food and UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Sites like the Mayan sites or Aztec Pyramids. Paton says, “Exploring Chichén Itzá offers insights into Mayan culture and history,” Along with its rich heritage Mexico in recent years has been improving their travel safety for visitors, encouraging them to come.

4. Greece
While Greece is a part of Europe, in the survey when asked “If you could take a vacation anywhere in the world, where would it be?” about 10% of people answered Greece. Besides, Greece has always been known for being less costly compared to some other European countries. There are also many historical ruins in the country that provide an impressive story about their history. But if you’re looking for some relaxing sun Greece has over 160,000 kilometers of sand, pebble, and rock beaches.

5. Niagara Falls
Thought to be the fastest series of waterfalls in the entire world, estimates suggest they gush around 700,000 gallons of water from four Great Lakes. Paton says, “The thundering waters at the border of Canada and the United States never fail to mesmerize visitors, providing an unforgettable bucket list experience,” Niagara Falls Park is full of historical significance being the oldest state park in the nation. Along with the amazing view and history lesson Niagara Falls is an abundant natural habitat filled with all kinds of wildlife. For example there are over 400 species of birds.

While all of these places would make memorable vacations, sometimes we can’t afford the most extravagant ones, like the 27.5% in the survey that said they would love to but don’t have the funds. But you can still have a great vacation without breaking the bank. One way is to stay in the US, there are so many notable destinations from Washington DC to California. You could even stay in Wisconsin by going to the Wisconsin Dells or visiting our capital. One thing for certain is that you could probably skip Florida, another question in the survey asked “What is one (or more) vacation spots you feel are overrated?” and around 45% response was Florida.
After reading this article I hope that you have thought of some new vacation ideas, even if it wasn’t on this list. Traveling is all about experiencing new cultures and the joys that each place has to offer.
