Are you a person who only listens to a playlist of a few songs on repeat? Do you only listen to one genre of music? This article is perfect for you then.It turns out people do this because they either find other genres “Boring” or they just aren’t comfortable with listening to other types of music.
Music is a key to feeling better throughout the day. All types of music can change the way you feel, for instance, it is stated in this article by Rebecca Corgan, “popular music is associated with higher levels of endurance and spurts of energy”. As shown here listening to ¨pop¨ music can get you feeling energetic. Another example from her on how music can make you feel better is that “Many classic jazz songs run at that more relaxing clip, providing a great incentive to slow down and take a journey through popular songs of the past” Even though it’s unpopular jazz music is proven to make you feel more calm and to mellow your mind out.
Music can also help people be more accepting of people of different backgrounds. It is stated in an article by Manjia (Ally) Chen that “it opens ourselves up to new experiences and perspectives and builds empathy” Listening to music allows us to visualize what that person might have experienced and how they could have felt.
If you still aren’t convinced that you should listen to diverse music then listen to my Journalism teacher Mrs. Porlier. She has a diverse music taste and she’s a regular person just like you and me. I asked her “What do you think the benefits of listening to many music genres are?” Her response was that “It is exciting and you get to experience different peoples lives/experiences.” This is because when you listen to music from different people it plays a little movie in your head so you’re able to experience what the artist is singing about. Another question I asked her was “Do you think certain types of music make people act differently?” And she responded with “Yes, I think depending on my mood, certain music can definitely change how I’m feeling. When I ran Cross Country for instance, I needed music that would pump me up, even if I wasn’t in racing mode. Music is actually really powerful in that it can have an impact on your mood in that way.” This is further reinforcing my fact on how music can boost your mood and make you feel lively.
In conclusion, I believe having a diverse music taste is beneficial to a person. When I’m sad I try to listen to music to boost my mood and make me feel happier, I usually listen to rap music or pop music. It also has helped me make friends or give me a topic to talk about when a conversation is dry. But I believe you should really consider having a more diverse music taste.
